Hackathon PPT template: free downloads and a slide-by-slide format

By Vikram · Updated 14 Oct 2026

A good hackathon PPT gets your team shortlisted. Judges read dozens of idea decks in an evening and remember the ones that are short, clear and specific. Below are three free templates you can edit in PowerPoint or Google Slides, and what to put on every slide.

Each file is a normal .pptx: open it in PowerPoint or Keynote, or upload it to Google Drive and open it with Google Slides. Type over the grey guidance text. Tips for each slide are in the speaker notes.

The 6-slide idea PPT format

Most idea rounds ask for about six slides. This structure works for almost any hackathon and follows what judges score:

SlideWhat to put on itWhat judges look for
1. TitleIdea title, a one-line summary, problem statement ID, team and collegeCan I tell what this is in five seconds?
2. ProblemWho faces it, how big it is (one number with a source), today's workaroundA real, specific problem
3. SolutionWhat the user does, what your product does, three key features, what's differentClarity and novelty
4. How it worksData flow or architecture, and your tech stackCan this team build it in time?
5. Feasibility and planRisks and how you'll handle them, and a build planHonest, realistic thinking
6. ImpactReach, savings, benefits and referencesWho is better off, and by how much

SIH 2026 PPT format

Smart India Hackathon has its own idea format, and teams must use the official file without changing its headings. The SIH 2026 template has six slides:

  1. Title page: problem statement ID and title, theme, PS category (software or hardware), team ID and team name.
  2. Idea title and proposed solution: a detailed explanation, how it addresses the problem, and what makes it innovative and unique.
  3. Technical approach: the technologies (languages, frameworks, hardware) and how you will implement it, with flow charts, images or a working prototype.
  4. Feasibility and viability: how feasible the idea is, the challenges and risks, and how you will overcome them.
  5. Impact and benefits: the impact on the target audience, and the social, economic or environmental benefits.
  6. Research and references: links to the research and work your idea builds on.

Keep it to six slides including the title, use points and diagrams rather than paragraphs, and upload it as a PDF on the SIH portal: PPT and Word files are not accepted. Download the official file from sih.gov.in and read our Smart India Hackathon 2026 guide.

The final round pitch deck

In a final round you usually get three to five minutes, and the demo matters more than the slides. About eight slides is enough:

  1. Title: project name and the one-line promise.
  2. Problem: one striking number and one real person.
  3. What you built: a screenshot and three features.
  4. Live demo: one complete user journey, with a recorded video as backup.
  5. How it works: your architecture and the hardest problem you solved.
  6. Results: what you measured (accuracy, speed, users) and how.
  7. What's next: a one-month, three-month and one-year plan, and your ask.
  8. Thank you: team, GitHub, demo and video links, left on screen during questions.

Mistakes that get decks rejected

  • Paragraphs of text instead of points, diagrams and screenshots.
  • A vague problem ("pollution is a big issue") with no user and no number.
  • Ten features and no explanation of how any of them works.
  • More slides than the limit, or changing an organizer's template when it says not to.
  • A Google Slides link only you can open. Set it to "Anyone with the link can view" before you submit.
  • Missing details the organizer asked for, such as the problem statement or team ID.

Tip: Write the problem slide first. If you can't fill it with a specific user and a number, the idea needs more work before the deck does. More in how to win a hackathon.

Frequently asked questions

How many slides should a hackathon PPT have?

Usually 5 to 7 for an idea round (SIH allows at most 6, including the title slide) and 8 to 10 for a final pitch. Always follow the organizer's limit.

Can I use these templates for any hackathon?

Yes. They are free to use and edit for any hackathon, ideathon or college competition. For SIH, use the official template from sih.gov.in instead.

Do the templates work in Google Slides?

Yes. Upload the .pptx to Google Drive and open it with Google Slides, or use File → Import slides in an existing deck.

Should I submit a PPT or a PDF?

Whatever the organizer asks for. SIH only accepts PDF. Exporting to PDF also keeps your fonts and layout intact.
